Here are the attendance numbers for the 2008 CBI tournament. Each team needed to guarantee $60,000 + an additional 60% of gate receipts after the $60,000 guarantee is met. Average ticket price was around $15.

Tues. March 18:

4,022 Richmond @ Virginia

2,036 Rider @ ODU

1,169 Brown @ Ohio

4,252 Houston @ Nevada

Wed. March 19:
5,114 Cincinnati @ Bradley
3,227 Valpo @ Washington
5,313 Utah @ UTEP
5,365 Miami (OH) @ Tulsa

It would appear that it helps to have an additional 24 hours to promote the tournament games. Although Wednesday's attendance is not great, they drew about 2,000 more people per game.

At least the OU players got to enjoy a postseason win - and they are still playing. The coach said he would simply schedule a road buy game next year if they needed to make up for any loss. Sounds pretty simple to me. Too bad Cusak didn't think of that.

But now Ohio could be faced with hosting another home game, and they will have to fork over another $60,000, and another road buy game next year?? Will they have any non conference home games left next year if they keep hosting? Maybe a little absurd, but I suppose it could happen.

That's one way to do it Willy, assuming that somebody's willing to offer a strong mid-major a buy game. We'll see how many of those automatic losses are on OU's 2008-09 non-conference schedule.

My idea of the March Madness experience isn't playing in front 1,169, but OU can say that they did enjoy a post season victory, for what it's worth. Considering that OU brokered their way into the CBI, they're getting what they want.

If you really believe that the Big 6 conferences are that superior to everyone else maybe we should go to 1-AA in basketball. Ohio U. may lose a pay game but, I hope they show up thinking they belong on the same court. Make fun of the CBI if you want but, we did want to participate. Some people think that not being in one of the three tournaments ( when 1/3 of all schools get to play ) makes us look second rate, some people think that if we did participate in the third option ( CBI ) that would make us look second rate. You can't win. Maybe an Ohio U fan or a Miami fan can tell us if it was worth it, maybe we don't care. Guess we know why some people weren't at our NCAA tournament game last year ( I didn't think it was an automatic loss playing Big East's Pittsburgh, I went expecting to see a Raider win ).

It simply comes down to, do you want to pay to play in a tournament this year nobody cares about or is watching? Or would you rather spend that money next season by trying to bring in someone to play at the Nutter Center that will get you into one of the tournaments people do care about?

Personally, I'm hoping for a solid schedule next season with good mid-majors and possibly a good tournament in November or December. If the staff can come up with a decent game or two against BCS schools, that would be just dandy.

We all know the conference tournaments, the NIT, and CBI are all about making money. Sure the individual schools and players want to experience more games, but the force pushing these tournaments is $$$. I suspect in due time we may see the NIT expand to 64 teams. If that happens the NCAA may become BCS exclusively, don't know for sure. For now I'll just enjoy TV viewing of the games and look forward to WSU baseball and softball. Go Raiders!

If we spent the money on an opponent for next year, are you saying the money is there? If you bring in a quality opponent, isn't it easier to justify coming if you are playing a team that was in postseason?

TommyGun, well said. I too went to Buffalo with the hopes of returning for WSU´s 2nd round game. I do not consider any game that we play to be an automatic loss.....why play if that is the case.

Also, Wolf 41, are you saying that the Big Dance is not about making money???? If anything, they are in it for the money more than anyone. The Big Dance equals Big Money.

I think there were a lot of factors that went into their decision not to attend. Travel costs, ticket availability, vacation time, weather etc. are very important things to consider before making a road game. Not eveyone has the same means as many of us do.

I don't know what the actual Raider fan head count was in Buffalo last year, but I would bet it was the most heavily attended road game, last year...besides Butler.

Most of the fans attended the game to show their support for the team. I think everyone of them believed we had a chance to win the game and were disappointed that we lost.

My reference was to Klinger being in New Orleans for the opening/first round. Not sure if he ever explained the reason, he may have been in Buffalo, too. I don't remember the game that well.
The reason I'm picking on him is because of his attitude towards the majority of D1 teams not being able to compete with the "big" boys in his mind ( although he also thinks mid-majors may not compete within their leagues, too - guess he just likes the favorites in whatever form ). He knows I'll pick on him ( it isn't because he or any of our other fans may or may not have been able to travel to Buffalo ).

It appears that I may have confused some people with one of my posts in another thread. I copied/pasted a few paragraphs from an online article. I provided a link to the article at the bottom of that post. It was the author of the article that was in New Orleans. Not me.

JSBSON is 100% correct as to why we weren't in Buffalo. I needed to be at work, we had already made vacation plans, and 90% of my paid time off for the year had already been budgeted. My wife also had final exams that week. As a result, we stayed home and watched the game on TV, rooting for the Raiders, even though the #14 seeds of the NCAA tournament had won just 3 games over the past 10 years. Nothing will keep me from pulling for my favorite team despite the odds.

I don't have the numbers, but I've got to believe that the BCS teams win better than 90% of those "paycheck" games that are played on the BCS home courts. Now if the BCS teams will go on the road for those games, we're talking another story.

FWIW, seeds #13 - 16 have won just 6 opening round games over the past 6 tournaments. I'll admit, there are no automatic losses, but 6-90 is pretty close.

I might be nuts, but I am picking Oral Roberts (#13) to beat Pitt in my office pool. I've got all other #1 thru #4 seeds picked to win in the opening round.

I agree...lol. Pitt just doesn't seem like a team that is ever going to lose to a mid-major in the first round. You're a genius Klinger if Oral Roberts wins, but I think's it quite a longshot.

By the way, apparently Valpo beat Washington last night in the CBI! I think the tournament is kind of silly, but we might as well root for Valpo to win I guess. I think they play Houston next. So go Valpo!

WSU Raider, Of course the NCAA tournament makes money. It is the pathway to the final 4 and the national title. But the NIT and CBI are pathways to ...? They are meant to make money period. Sure the final teams may get a trophy, a trophy that signifies...?

Postseason play of any kind would normally signify some sort of success ( UC or teams getting automatic bids with losing records being noted ). Most places hang banners for merely participating. Some would argue that such an appearance helps recruiting. You'll have to decide whether or not kids think playing in the postseason is important but, I'll bet they'd like to go to the Big Dance at least once and may ( or may not ) be satisfied with something else along the way.

Didn't Oral Roberts beat Kansas this season? If it were Kansas instead of Pitt, I might agree, as the Jayhawks have a history of first round flops.
