Wright State releases list of AD candidates

FAIRBORN - Wright State released the names of its final four athletic director candidates today, May 2, and the list includes current associate AD Bob Grant.

The other three candidates - all with strong Midwestern roots - include Stephen Downing, senior associate AD at Texas Tech and a former administrator and basketball player at Indiana; Brian Teter, director of athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and former Great Midwest Conference assistant commissioner and sports information director at Miami University; and Kevin McNamee, deputy associate athletic director at George Mason and an Indiana graduate.

I say hire Bob Grant for the job. If he is impressive enough to make the final four then he is impressive enough to be hired. He already has the big money boosters and the contacts needed to raise money if needed. The Right Choice for Wright State is Bob Grant!!

I don't care who the other candidates are, Bob Grant should be WSU's AD. I would hope that the final 4 is just a formality because Bob Grant is the clear choice. I'm not sure many Raider fans are aware of this fact, but Bob Grant was responsible for Brad Brownell's hiring. Grant came up with the original idea of contacting Brownell and championed the cause for Brownell. Hire Bob Grant and Brownell will be a fixture at WSU.

I am a huge Grant supporter too and want him to get the job, but you are crazy if you think hiring him is going to keep Brownell here. Once the right BCS program offers him a job, he's gone.

You are quite right,hoopster, no one would turn down the kind of money that the right BCS school would offer. However, Grant knows all the right people who could up the ante in order to keep Coach as long as possible until that right offer comes.

GMU's Kevin McNamee was the front runner for the vacant UNCW AD position last year (available because the old AD ran off Brownell and we proceeded to have the worst season in school history under his new hire) before the Chancellor advised that diversity is a strategic goal for the university under her watch. Not kidding. Mr. McNamee met with some of the students during the interview process and blew them away with his enthusiasm and knowledge, especially working at a basketball first school coming off the Final Four (and for us a working knowledge of CAA basketball). Anyways, here's a video interview McNamee discussing Mason's Final Four run a couple of seasons ago. Might give you a different perspective of the guy if he happens to land the job over Grant (which even from a outside observer seems to make the most sense for the job) but sometimes new blood ain't such a bad thing if the person is qualified. Thinking out loud here, maybe Brownell is pushing McNamee from their connections from the CAA?? I don't know. Anyways, enjoy the vids. And good luck on the process.

Whoever we pick I at least hope the committee consults with Brownell before making the offer. I'm not saying we have to pick Coach's choice but we need to make sure Brownell will be happy/content working for whoever gets the job.

I, for one completely agree with you OhioPirate. The reason we were able to get Coach Brownell was he did not get along with the UNCW AD. I believe that Bob Grant is the obvious choice for AD.

Don´t get me wrong, I love reading and posting on this board. While living in Germany, this is my only real connection to any WSU buzz. I do find it funny though that everyone has to feel the same way about everything and we are considered a non WSU supporter if we voice a different opinion. I have to bite my tongue quite a bit when posting on here because the general atmosphere is that if you are not with us you are against us. I am sure that this board has no sway on who our next AD will be, but I am forced to bite my tongue because of the Bob Grant supporters. The goal of the University should be to find the best person for the job, not the next person in line for the job. If, after the search, Bob Grant is chosen because he was the best fit, so be it (believe it or not, I like Bob Grant). But, if he is not chosen, we need to understand that the University is doing the best thing for the program.

No problem, WSU Raider, I really do like Bob Grant and have known him since he started working for the Athletic Dept. and have seen first hand what he has accomplished while in various positions within Athletics. I know that Butler Athletics hires from within their own and it sure seems to work for them. I would certainly like to have some continuity within our own Athletic Dept. My opinion is strictly my own and I will not stop supporting WSU Athletics because the person I supported did not get hired for a particular job. I was a huge Ralph Underhill supporter and I wanted Jim Brown to be hired but he wasn't and Ed Schilling was then hired. I really liked Ed Schilling and supported him and still like what he stands for and believes in. I supported Coach Biancardi and travelled to about all of the road games to support the team. Coach Brownell, what can we say about our current head coach that hasn't been said already. Everybody knows where I stand all of the time- IN BROWNELL WE TRUST.

To agree to disagree is what a message board is all about. If you disagree with something I have posted, don't let that stop you from posting a reply. I am just hoping that the best thing for the University is to hire Bob Grant as the Athletic Director.

I'm with you WSU Raider. I am just waiting for the selection to be made so we can move on at WSU. I still plan on attending all the games I can over the upcoming years. I'm sure Bob Grant will do a fine job, but hope all fans support whoever is selected for the post. I go with the assumption that the selection committee will pick the individual they think is best for the position.

Best of luck to the spring sports teams as they wrap up their seasons.

Considering the fact that program leadership is currently in good hands and it appears that we have the makings of a winning team, the next goal, I believe, is improving attendance. The new AD, be it Bob Grant or one of the other candidates, needs to represent a new, innovative direction to promote and market the program. More of the same worries me. This is a basketball town and there is room for two programs again, like '91 -'95. We need to capitalize on the the momentum of the recent past and the next few years to build this program to be strong even after Coach B moves on. We need to be respected in our community again, and not just enjoyed by us diehards. I believe it can happen and the next 20 years can be founded properly by continuing the success on the court and by getting more people in the stands to solidify growth. I'm excited about being here to watch it happen.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is under investigation by the NCAA for potential violations committed in three sports and by the institution.

The NCAA is examining the possibility that an ineligible athlete participated in volleyball, and questions a university report filed to the NCAA about the possible volleyball violation.

A non-qualifying athlete in men's tennis could have received improper financial aid. It also mentions potential impermissible benefits given to a prospective men's basketball player and that the men's basketball staff might have used personal funds during recruiting.

Men's basketball was mentioned again in that a student-athlete might have received improper credit for course work while serving in the men's basketball office.

The letter was sent to university president Flavius Killebrew, and copied to athletic director Brian Teter and Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett.

Burnett and Teter, who was named a finalist for the same position at Wright State Friday, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Killebrew said in a release that the university is taking the allegation seriously and will cooperate with the NCAA.

This should negate our interest in Teter immediately. Wright State should issue a press release removing him from consideration; we obviously don't want another Biancardi-type situation where the Wright State reputation is sullied due to infractions at another institution.

Strengthens Bob Grant's candidacy, doesn't it? We know he's clean. It may be unfair, but the other two guys take it on the chin because of fear of the unknown and the risks that come with it.

It sure looks as if Athletics is in good hand under the current Athletics Administration. Men's BBall won over 20 games for the 2nd straight year, women's BBall played in the HL Tourney Finals, WSU Softball won the HL Tourney Title a few hours ago and baseball is in 1st place. We don't need an unknown as Athletic Director when we already have a very capable replacement in Bob Grant as Athletic Director.
