I like your guys' optimism but I think we'd be lucky to get an 11 seed, if we make the tournament which is an accomplishment in itself.

Wolf, I think the only action our Reds are providing this year is watching the other team hit homeruns off of our young pitchers! I'm a huge Reds fan, but sometimes I wonder, when will they actually be good again? I thought 2009 might be the year but not so sure anymore. It's sad how far the Reds franchise has fallen. I thought the new ownership would really turn things around, and I still have some faith in them, but it's not turning around as quick as I thought it would. It seems like another wasted season, but with a little more hope since Jay Bruce, Volqeuz, Votto and other youngsters are getting to play.,

Back to basketball!

What you say is true, Roadtrip; however, I know that most years we get unofficial word as the games start falling into place. Just doesn't seem to be any of that this year. Maybe I am too antsy, but I'd sure like to know something. I guess I am pretty sure of a Miami game and a bracketbuster return trip, and I suppose a new bracketbuster opponent, but that's about all as far as non-conference goes. Oh well, keeping the ear to the ground.

I am pretty sure that we play Toledo away this year. Everyone is speculating that we play in an exempt tournament this year. We will just have to wait and see where that is going to be.

I at least know we're not in the Hawai'i Tournament, that field was announced a few months back. Besides, that tournament isn't televised nationally and the payout isn't that great--not a well attended event.

They usually pull a good name program but the rest is usually low-end major programs and mid-majors. The Rainbows themselves have been a down program as of late and haven't had much success in winning the thing.

Butler went 29-3 and was ranked in the top 15 essentially and could only manage a 7 seed. A 6 or 7 seed would be very ambitious for Wright State.

I agree. If you're a mid-major, you're wasting your time worrying about your seeding, because the NCAA's seeding formula is not about rewarding mid-majors for their success. It's about eliminating them prior to the sweet 16.

The majority of mid-major conference champions are seeded 13 thru 16, opening against teams seeded 1 thru 4. The good mid-majors are seeded 7 thru 10, usually matched against each other. The winners of the 8 vs. 9 and 7 vs. 10 games will get the #1 and #2 seeds in the second round, thus eliminating virtually all mid-majors prior to the sweet 16. It's rare that a mid-major gets better than a 7 seed. Doing so, would increase the chances of one advancing to the sweet 16.

I'm looking forward to the announcement of our upcoming schedule. Wright State fans should be pleased. 2008-09 will be a great time to be a Raider fan. There's room on the bandwagon, so jump aboard before it leaves without you.

Part of the NCAA seeding process revolves around quality wins. If you enter conference play and everyone in the league has a winning record, statistically you're going to get more chances at quality wins that will impress the committee. Just about every major conference team enters conference play with a winning record, and some enter having just lost one or two games.

If you enter conference play and half the teams (or more) have losing records, then it decreeses the number of opportunities you get to rack up quality wins. That's not to say it can't be done. Gonzaga recently went three years in a row where they were seeded #3 or better. They just needed to get their big wins out of conference. Butler was seeded #5 in 2007 and Southern Illinois received a #4 seed. Memphis is in Conference USA, which quite frankly isn't all that much better than the Horizon League once you eliminate Memphis. They've been seeded #1 or #2 for the past three years. It can be done, but it's difficult. Unfortunately if a "mid-major" (I still hate that term) wants a good seed, they need to schedule big out of conference, win, and hope the teams that they beat go on to have successful seasons. Just getting those teams to play you can be a challenge.

Klinger, you are exactly right! The BCS schools don't like the little guys raining on their parade ( more like dipping into their cash cow ). It is amazing how they try to pair mid majors against each other in the NCAA Tournament or like you said give us no better then a 7 seed which means we'll face a 1 or 2 seed in the second round. It was a huge victory for the mid major's when Butler and S. Illinios received a 5 & 4 seed respectively and imagine what happened.........both Butler & S. Illinios made the sweet sixteen.

Let's hope that we can compete well in the San Jaun Shootout and maybe, just maybe win the darn thing and garner some minor national attention.

on another raider board someone listed a series of teams that we are playing next year. i think the information came from other schools' websites and the release of their schedules. their are 8-10 teams listed and some of them appear to be possibilities from the sjs. honestly, imo, the list overall looks pretty weak, at least based upon last years records/rpi. i am hoping something will be added that will strengthen the schedule or perhaps that some of the teams listed are a mistake. i think 6 of the 10 or so were in the bottom half of the rpi last year. i guess we will see when it is officially released. GO RAIDERS!!!!!

For convenience, here are the schools Keith is referring to:
Illinois State
Oral Roberts
George Mason
Miami
Central Michigan
South Florida
Toledo
Murray State
Florida Atlantic
Norfolk State

We still have games left to schedule. When you throw in a new Bracket Buster opponent and San Juan, I think this will be a very challenging schedule. We know the top 4 teams on the above list will be very, very tough. We know the next four are tough teams. Certainly Toledo has wiped us out numerous times. I think Florida Atlantic will be a better team this year than last. So of the 10 teams, I think Norfolk State may be the one soft touch.

Now we just need to play up to our potential. I think Elvis use to wear a baseball cap with the initials TCB on it. "Taking Care of Business" is what WSU has to do next season. We'll be stronger, as will the HL. Let's get it done.

klinger, while i think as a general rule you are right, the exceptions prove that it is worthwhile to worry about your seeding possibilities. siu, butler and gonzaga have shown it can be done by consistant performance. we need to do likewise. schedule strong and, as wolf/elvis said, take care of business. if we do those two things the seeding will take care of itself. but if we neglect either, we will pay a price. It looks like the San Juan Shootout is a done deal. The tourney runs Dec. 18th thru Dec. 23rd. Bob Grant sent an e-mail to all Raider Club members today regarding any interest in going to the Tourney. I do know in 1993 the Athletic Department organized a trip to San Juan for the Shootout.

I am a Raider Club member (green level), what level do I need to be for exclusive offers (I didn't get the San Juan email)? I am a season ticket holder and pay the premium (2nd year). I am a new fan and not sure how the Raider Club works.

RaiderNutt, according to the WSU athletic site you need to be at the athletic directors level ($1000) or higher to get exclusive invitations. I guess us low lifes in the green level just get a nice magnet.

...Oh and I forgot, we also get the good feeling of knowing we too are helping support the Raiders, every little bit helps!

Alot of the teams listed are teams that are confirmed for the San Juan Shootout. We won't be playing all of them. South Florida, Murray State, Oral Roberts, George Mason and Florida Atlantic are the confirmed teams. I would imagine we will be playing three of those, at best.

I just got back from vacation and spent one night in a hotel in Chattanooga. As luck would have it there was a dude working the front desk there who had on a Chatanooga Basketball shirt. I asked him what his affiliation was and he said he was a "GA" for the team. I don't know what a "GA" is, but he talked like he had a lot of inside details. I specifically asked him about the Dr. Pepper Classic and he said, point blank, WSU is not coming down. No reason, just a flat statement. I don't know whether we turned them down or they turned us down, but that's what he said. I am imagining all sorts of sour grapes on their part.

Other things he said was that they were impressed with Pleiman and how it was him that beat them. They were also impressed by Duggins...who isn't?
He's counting their chickens already, figuring they will be in post season. For him, either Davidson or UTC will go to NCAA and the other will go to NIT. Nice that he has such confidence.

Then he started talking Horizon league and how Cleveland State is the favorite. Then he named 3-4 other teams that looked good to him. Funny, he didn't even mention WSU. Pi..ed me off a bit. I am thouroughly convinced that we are much stronger than last year and are going to kick big butt. Nice to know that others are underrating us right now. It's gonna be a fun year. I don't see nearly as many squeekers as we had last year, and perhaps a win or two extra to move us up in the basketball world.

Oh yeah. Another thing the guy talked about was Brownell. He was confused about why BB did not pursue the Indiana job more furiously. He has no doubt that BB will be moving up to a bigger, more prestigious school, and it will probably be after this year if WSU does well. Of course we'll do well, so the thought saddens me that our success might cost us our coach....but life will go on and WSU will continue to improve.

If it makes you feel any better, I ran into a guy in New York City this weekend. He saw my WSU shirt and said, "Wright State! You're in our conference. You guys are going to be the team to beat this year".

He said that he was from UWM, but he was wearing a Wisconsin Badgers t-shirt. I don't get it. Kind of like Wright State fans wearing Ohio State stuff, I guess.

I wouldn't guess that we'd be invited back to the Dr. Pepper Classic, usually host schools rotate the opponents. At least it isn't common for those little tournaments to have the same teams. But I bet they'll be smart this year and schedule lesser opponents.

Klinger, I don´t know about you, but I happen to be a fan of a number of teams. I tend to wear items from both WSU and OSU whether it be at home or on the road. This will probably sound a little dumb, but when I travel (especially out of state or country) I wear items from OSU figuring that people will recognize that I am representing the great state of OH - IO. The point is that I do not always wear WSU gear and maybe you caught this guy the day after or before his UWM day.

Doesn´t matter really, I am just glad that we have something to talk about lol... By the way, has there been any word on when the schedule is due out?
